종교의 공공성 논의 : 호세 카사노바의 공적 종교(Public Religion) 논의를 중심으로
이 글은 호세 카사노바가 제시한 공적 종교의 의미를 적극적으로 수용하면서 새로운 공적 종교의 가능성을 모색해 보고자 한다. 호세 카사노바는 근대세계에서의 공적 종교에서 계몽 주의 이후 종교의 세속화로 인해 종교가 사적인 영역으로 축소되었다는 입장에 대해 반박하며, 여전히 종교는 새로운 공적 영역에서 다시 등장했다고 주장한다. 그는 미국에서의 가톨릭과 개 신교 근본주의, 브라질의 민중 교회, 폴란드의 시민 교회, 스페인의 탈 제도화(Disestablishment) 운동의 교회 등에서 이러한 사례들을 발견한다. 그는 근대 이후 종교가 여러 분화의 과정에서 성과 속의 한쪽에 머물러 개인의 사적인 영역으로 축소되어 더 이상 공적인 힘을 발휘하지 못 하고 있다는 주장에 맞서 종교는 여전히 세속 사회 한복판에서 공공종교로서 기능하고 있다고 주장한다. 그의 주장은 오늘날 한국에서의 종교의 공공성 논의와 관련하여 많은 시사점을 던져 준다. 여기서는 그의 사례 연구의 지평을 한국의 공적 종교현상과 연관하여 비교 고찰함과 동 시에 현대적 의미의 공적 종교의 기능에 대해 논의해 보고자 한다.
Discussing the Publicness of Religion : Focusing on José Casanova’s Public Religion Debate
While there are many different perspectives on the publicness of religion, this article will introduce José Casanova’s discussion of public religion and explore the possibility of a new public religion that actively embraces his meaning of public religion. In Public Religion in the Modern World, José Casanova refutes the position that the secularization of religion since the Enlightenment has reduced religion to the private sphere, and argues that religion has still reemerged in a new public sphere. He finds examples of this in Catholic and Protestant fundamentalism in the U.S., People’s church in Brazil, the civic church in Poland, and the churches of the Disestablishment movement in Spain. Against the argument that religion since the Enlightenment has been reduced to the private sphere of individuals and no longer exerts a public force, he argues that religion still functions as a public religion in the midst of a secular society. His argument has many implications for discussions of the publicness of religion in Korea today. In this paper, I will compare the horizons of his case study with the phenomenon of public religion in Korea and discuss the function of public religion in the contemporary sense.
